Overview

At Applied Signal Technology, Inc. (AST), our solutions are aligned with our customers' highest priorities. We provide the intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities America needs to prevail in the war against terrorism, to secure our homeland, and to anticipate and support emerging threats. This focus has made AST an exceptional national resource.

The AST Story

In 1984, AST initiated business operations in Sunnyvale, California, with four founders and a vision of providing advanced digital signal processing technologies that protect and enhance global security. Today, we remain true to that vision. AST has grown into a full service ISR provider, serving national priorities in defense, intelligence, and homeland security with over $200 million in annual revenues. AST is committed to bringing cutting-edge science and engineering together for the protection of our country and delivering quality customer service and best value.

Protecting Our Nation and Enhancing Global Security

National security is at the core of AST's mission. For more than a quarter of a century, this focus has driven our work in developing sophisticated reconnaissance systems and remote sensing technologies that help resolve our customers' most difficult national security issues, both at home and abroad.

We provide expertise in the areas of broadband communications, signals intelligence (SIGINT), cyber security, and sensor surveillance, with a common core competency in digital signal processing (DSP). SIGINT capabilities include the collection and exploitation of communication signals (COMINT) and the interception of electromagnetic signals, such as radar and weapons systems, for electronic intelligence (ELINT). Cyber security capabilities include network monitoring, intrusion detection, and countermeasures. Remote sensing capabilities include processing information from sonar, radar, magnetic, electromagnetic, infrared, electro-optical, hyperspectral, and visible light sensors to detect abnormalities of interest and increase situational awareness. We have experience in space, airborne, terrestrial, and undersea environments.

We provide engineering and scientific services to explore new fundamental operational concepts, develop novel approaches to solving tough problems, develop new capabilities and equipment, perform equipment and platform integration, provide off-site and on-site support and training, and perform advanced signal, image, and data analysis to understand operating environments for pre-, post-, and on-going mission support. Additionally, we bring a unique blend of complex signal processing (passive and active) and advanced exploitation capabilities to prosecute the cyberspace domain. Our diverse range of services include: system engineering, service-oriented architectures, cloud computing, software development, application performance management, web portal development, data management, specialized analytical tool development, and data mining.

We invest heavily in internal research and development (IR&D) in anticipation of customer requirements and to ensure we are at the cutting edge of scientific and engineering advances. Approximately 15–20% of our technical staff works on IR&D projects throughout the year. The results of the IR&D are new operational concepts, feasibility studies and demonstrations, new products and technologies, analysis support tools, and advanced studies on emerging problems and threats. For example, a core capability that emerged from IR&D projects over the last few years is our designs for low size, weight, and power (SWAP) systems. We are now one of the nation's leaders in low SWAP electronics.

We use a centralized manufacturing facility to ensure robust and reliable products. Manufacturing design services such as quality assurance (QA), configuration management (CM), and mechanical engineering are involved in product development from the start to ensure cost-effective and reliable manufacturing. We also design, develop, and manufacture to strict military specifications when required. We can often deliver equipment on very short schedules because we build equipment to inventory. This strategy enables rapid mission deployment for crisis situations.

We employ more than 800 people across the United States, with headquarters in Sunnyvale, California and a significant workforce in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. This represents one of the most talented and innovative workforces in the industry. More than 600 of our people hold college degrees—including nearly 300 advanced degrees—in virtually every business and technical field.

Overall, our company provides a unique capability in helping to protect the U.S. and allied nations against military and terrorist threats. Our deep knowledge of science and engineering is unmatched in the industry and leads to unique solutions for our customers. Applied Signal Technology systems and personnel are significant contributors to our national security.
