Synthetic Aperture Sonar
The Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) business segment provides a unique real-time processing product, PROSAS™, with state-of-the-art functionalities valuable to both commercial and military markets. To continue the development of its cutting-edge technology, our SAS business segment actively provides advanced R&D services to government customers such as the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Defense Advanced Research Agency (DARPA), Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), as well as international customers.
We began to apply our knowledge of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing to sonar in 1989. Our scientists recognized that several important developments by the SAR community could contribute to the success of underwater aperture synthesis. Since then, we have been one of the leading forces in the advancement of this technology, culminating in the development of the first true long-range, real-time, streaming SAS processor product, suitable for application to a broad range of commercial and military sonar systems.
Our SAS business segment has conducted a wide range of research and development programs. These include the development and application of SAS processing algorithms, motion compensation and auto-focus techniques, ocean environmental effects on SAS, and interferometric SAS processing. Current research emphasis includes long-range, low-frequency SAS for anti-submarine warfare (ASW), advanced target classification algorithms, and the implementation of low-power real-time processing capability in autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).
