Dynamics Technology, Inc. Demonstrates
Through-Barrier 3-D Mapping and Material Classification Technology
Dynamics Technology Leads Development of Portable Associated Particle Analysis System
ARLINGTON, VA , October 20, 2004 – Under a U.S. government sponsored program to develop advanced technologies for military and civilian security applications, Dynamics Technology, Inc. (DTI), demonstrated a man-portable Associated Particle Analysis (APA) system designed to provide through-barrier detection and classification of explosives, chemical agents and other potential threats. The unique combination of material penetration, detailed material identification, and operational portability provided by DTI’s APA technology serves an important role in the nation’s integrated security capability. Building on over a decade of research, DTI led a team including Harris Corporation, DOE Special Technologies Laboratory, X-ray Instrumentation Associates and key component specialists in translating a powerful scientific technique toward a practical operational tool.
Associated Particle Analysis is a neutron inspection technology, in which high-energy neutrons penetrate barriers of any material including steel, interact with the objects behind the barrier, and scatter gamma rays back out of the inspection region. The gamma rays are collected by an array of detectors, and their energy spectrum can be used to infer the chemical composition of the objects being inspected. APA additionally provides 3-D mapping of objects by ‘tagging’ and timing individual neutrons to determine where each gamma ray originated within the inspection volume. Specialized processing algorithms that draw from DTI’s experience in hyperspectral analysis and data fusion enable APA to address operational scenarios ranging from detection of specific threats to sensitive identification of anomalies in complex 3-D scenes.
“Enabling U.S. military forces and civilian agencies to detect and assess potential threats at their source is of vital interest to our security,” said Dr. Michael Dube, DTI’s Vice President for Corporate Development. “We are very excited about the recent milestone in APA development. Our National Security Systems and Homeland Defense businesses are building on this capability through on-going programs sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Army, and through our key partners in industry and government laboratories.”
