Rapid detection, localization, and identification are key steps to effective monitoring for radiological material. The defense, intelligence, and commercial markets require a robust, lightweight system that quickly conducts covert or overt inspection of baggage, containers, vehicles, packages, and facilities, using tools that reach beyond fixed site security systems.
To
address this need, Applied Signal Technology’s National
Security Systems Division is developing highly sensitive,
portable radiation detection systems for area search and
surveillance, in-transit identification, and personal radiation
detection. These lightweight, compact radiation detection
systems will allow users to pinpoint the location of any
radioactive material, including special nuclear materials
and radiation dispersal devices. There are also plans to
develop a personal radiation detector that will provide
immediate protection, especially useful to emergency service
personnel. These micro systems will greatly benefit the
Department of Defense, Intelligence Community, Department
of Homeland Security, commercial, and international markets.
Suitable locations for installation include buildings at risk from potential terrorist attack or any location wanting to screen for radioactivity, such as baggage handling facilities, post offices, transport systems, hospitals, ports of entry, and border crossings.
